Statistical review of team performance, pitching staff composition, and trade deadline considerations
Executive Summary
Oakland enters the second half of the 2026 season at 41-55, sitting fourth in the AL West after a nine-game losing streak. As recently as late May, the team was in second place and just half a game out of first.
This report covers four key areas: whether the team's record matches its actual performance or is just the result of bad luck; if the starting rotation and bullpen are struggling equally; the current performance of our core position players; and how these factors should shape our trade deadline strategy.

Team Performance Overview
Record and Season Trajectory
Oakland's record has declined steadily since late May. The team held a season-high position of second place in the AL West, half a game back, before a 20-game stretch in which it went 3-17, including the nine-game losing streak that preceded the coaching change on July 13.

Run Differential and Pythagorean Analysis
A team's Pythagorean record, derived from runs scored and allowed rather than actual win-loss outcomes, provides an estimate of the record a team's underlying performance would be expected to produce. Comparing the two identifies whether a team's actual results have been aided or hindered by variance in close games.
Oakland's run differential of -106 (422 runs scored, 528 allowed) produces a Pythagorean expectation of 38-58, three wins below the team's actual 41-55 record. This indicates the actual record has been mildly aided by performance in close games. Any reversion toward the underlying run-differential-implied level would move the record further from, not closer to, .500.

Ballpark Factors
Sutter Health Park's outfield dimensions are comparable to those of the former Oakland Coliseum, a historically pitcher-neutral environment, and Statcast's raw carry adjustment for the venue is slightly below average. The park nonetheless carries a one-year pitching factor of 122, among the highest in the majors, indicating a significantly hitter-favorable run-scoring environment in 2026 specifically.
This effect is structural rather than dimensional. Sutter Health Park is a single-deck Triple-A facility offering substantially less wind protection than a typical major league ballpark. The venue is also affected by Sacramento's climate, which produces the fourth-warmest average game-time temperature in the majors. Warmer, less dense air carries batted balls further. The team's overall ERA (5.21) against its home-specific ERA (6.25) is consistent with this effect: assuming an approximately even split of innings between home and road games, the gap implies a road ERA near 4.20, a difference of roughly two runs attributable in part to the ballpark environment rather than pitching talent alone.
Pitching Staff Analysis
Overall team pitching stats hide the important differences between the starting rotation and the bullpen, as well as the differences among the pitchers in those groups. This section presents pitcher-level ERA and FIP data compiled directly from Baseball-Reference's team pitching table (July 3, 2026 snapshot) to assess which results reflect underlying performance.
Rotation and Bullpen Comparison
When adjusted for innings pitched, the rotation has a 4.62 ERA and a 4.93 FIP, meaning their actual results are slightly better than their true performance. The bullpen shows the opposite trend with a 4.57 ERA and a 4.07 FIP. This means their results are worse than their underlying metrics. Both groups are currently giving up runs at a similar rate, but the starters are overperforming while the relievers are underperforming.

Rotation Performance by Pitcher
Performance varies widely across the rotation. Jeffrey Springs started hot with a 1.46 ERA in his first four starts but has since declined. His current 5.79 ERA and 5.87 FIP match up closely, showing his struggles are tied to true performance rather than just bad luck. Jacob Lopez has the worst numbers on the staff with a 6.75 ERA and a 6.39 FIP. Aaron Civale has been below average but not disastrous, posting a 5.05 ERA and a 5.36 FIP.
Only two pitchers are performing above average in both ERA and FIP. J.T. Ginn was originally just pitching depth but has posted a strong 3.04 ERA and 4.18 FIP. Gage Jump is a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher with seven starts who has the best underlying numbers on the team with a 2.93 ERA and a 2.66 FIP. Before his 60-day stint on the injured list, Luis Severino was pitching close to the league average with a 4.16 ERA and a 4.48 FIP.

Bullpen Performance and the Mason Miller Trade
Oakland traded closer Mason Miller, then under club control through 2029, to San Diego at the 2025 trade deadline for a prospect package headlined by Leo De Vries, a consensus top-five overall prospect who has since reached Double-A at age 18.

From August 1, 2025 through the end of that season, Oakland's bullpen produced a 2.99 ERA, the second-best mark in the majors over that period. That level of performance has not been sustained into 2026, where bullpen ERA has regressed to 4.57, approximately league average. The unit's FIP over the same period (4.07) remains below the rotation's, indicating the underlying talent level of the relief corps has not declined to the same degree its ERA suggests.

The gap between the bullpen's 4.57 ERA and 4.07 FIP is concentrated in specific pitchers rather than distributed evenly. Mark Leiter Jr. (4.85 ERA, 3.01 FIP) and Jack Perkins (6.00 ERA, 3.62 FIP, now working primarily in relief after beginning the season in the rotation mix) show the largest gaps between results and process, indicating underperformance relative to their peripherals rather than a decline in underlying stuff. Scott Barlow (6.48 ERA, 6.44 FIP) is the one reliever whose ERA and FIP are both well above average, indicating a performance issue not explained by variance.
Position Player Analysis
This section examines four members of Oakland's position-player core: Nick Kurtz, the 2025 American League Rookie of the Year; Jacob Wilson, extended through 2032 in January 2026; Tyler Soderstrom, coming off a 2025 breakout season; and Shea Langeliers, the team's primary catcher. Their 2026 statistical profiles differ substantially.
Nick Kurtz
Nick Kurtz did not get the results his contact quality deserved early in the season. Over the first month, he posted a .244/.412/.412 slash line, showing he was getting on base but lacking his usual rookie power. FanGraphs noted that his expected wOBA was climbing even while his actual stats struggled. This showed his lower numbers were due to bad luck with batted balls rather than a drop in true talent.

By the All-Star break, his actual results matched his underlying data. Kurtz's 58.3% hard-hit rate and 18.1% barrel rate both rank well above league average. The small 10-point gap between his wOBA (.389) and expected wOBA (.379) indicates his high production is driven by true skill. He was selected to start the All-Star Game at first base before a right thumb sprain placed him on the injured list at the break.
Jacob Wilson
Oakland extended Wilson through 2032 in January 2026 on the strength of his 2025 rookie season (.311/.355/.444, 13 home runs, 63 RBI). His 2026 performance has declined across every metric examined.

Wilson's batting average has fallen from .311 to the low .270s. His hard-hit rate dropped over five points, and his barrel rate fell from 4.9% to just 1.7%. Since his barrel rate dropped much faster than his overall exit velocity, it suggests he is losing bat control rather than swing speed. This is a likely result of his right thumb injury affecting his grip, an issue that caused him to miss additional time during the season.
Tyler Soderstrom
Tyler Soderstrom broke out in 2025, playing 158 games and hitting .276/.346/.474 with 25 home runs and 93 RBI. This was a massive improvement over his .204 average and .636 OPS from his first two seasons. Originally a first baseman, he moved to left field midseason to make room for Nick Kurtz. He had never played the outfield professionally before this shift.
Soderstrom was having a productive 2026 season before suffering a left hip impingement. Over 80 games, he posted an .803 OPS with 13 home runs, 41 RBI, and 41 runs scored. His underlying metrics fully support these numbers. He recorded a 90.1 mph average exit velocity and a 44.8% hard-hit rate. Furthermore, his actual wOBA (.348) is nearly identical to his expected wOBA (.343). This small five-point gap confirms his strong production was driven by excellent contact quality.
Shea Langeliers
Shea Langeliers, the primary catcher, is hitting .257/.324/.483 with 21 home runs heading into the All-Star break. His underlying metrics are unique compared to the rest of the group. His expected wOBA is .360, which is 13 points higher than his actual .347 wOBA. Along with a strong 44.7% hard-hit rate and a 14.7% barrel rate, this shows he is actually hitting the ball better than his traditional stats suggest. We should expect his overall numbers to improve rather than decline.
Comparative Assessment: Actual vs. Expected Production
Comparing each player's actual wOBA to his expected wOBA (xwOBA) directly, without any additional calculation, indicates how much of each player's 2026 production is supported by the quality of his contact.

Kurtz's actual wOBA (.389) exceeds his expected wOBA (.379) by 10 points, a small gap sitting on top of contact quality that already ranks among the best in the league. Soderstrom shows a similar pattern in the same direction, with his actual wOBA (.348) sitting 5 points above his expected wOBA (.343), effectively no gap at all given typical season-to-season variance. Both indicate production that is well supported by underlying performance. Langeliers stands apart: his actual wOBA (.347) trails his expected wOBA (.360) by 13 points, meaning his contact quality currently supports better results than he has produced, and some improvement in results would not be surprising. Wilson's actual wOBA (.306) exceeds his expected wOBA (.279) by the largest margin among the four, 27 points, but in his case that gap sits on top of already below-average contact quality. The direction of a gap means something different depending on what it is built on: for Kurtz and Soderstrom it reflects a strong, matched process; for Langeliers it suggests room to improve; for Wilson it indicates his current production is not fully supported by the quality of contact behind it, and some further decline is more likely than a reversal.
Second-Half Outlook
Statistical Projection
Extrapolating Oakland's remaining 66 games at two different winning percentages produces the following estimates.

Projecting forward at the team's actual .427 winning percentage produces a final record of 69-93. Projecting at the Pythagorean-implied .396 winning percentage produces a final record of 67-95. Neither projection is consistent with second-half postseason contention.
Trade Deadline Considerations
Oakland approaches the trade deadline far out of playoff contention. The team is eight games out of first place and six and a half games back of a wild card spot, giving them roughly a 0.5% chance to make the postseason. This makes buying at the deadline unrealistic. At the same time, the team lacks strong pieces to sell. Pending free agents Jeff McNeil, hitting .226 with a .592 OPS, and Jeffrey Springs, with a 5.79 ERA, are both struggling. Neither player will bring back a massive prospect package like the Mason Miller trade did in 2025.
Key Risks
Rotation depth. With Severino on the injured list and no proven starting options beyond the current six-man group, an additional injury to a productive arm (Ginn, Jump) would leave the organization with minimal alternatives.
Bullpen workload. A relief corps whose FIP outperforms its ERA can still be affected by continued heavy usage if the rotation does not increase the length of individual outings.
Position player health. A recurrence of thumb-related injuries for either Kurtz or Wilson would affect the organization's two primary position-player assets simultaneously.
Limited trade capital. Following the 2025 trade of Mason Miller, the organization does not currently have an equivalent asset to leverage for a similarly significant return.
Recommendations
Based on the analysis above, the following recommendations are supported by the available data:
Do not pursue a rotation upgrade at the current trade deadline. The rotation's core issue, two below-average pitchers (Springs, Lopez) with limited proven depth behind them, is a player-development and roster-construction question better addressed in the offseason than through a deadline transaction involving a last-place team's return.
Reduce Scott Barlow's share of high-leverage bullpen innings. He is the only reliever on the staff whose ERA and FIP jointly indicate below-average performance; reallocating those innings to Leiter and Perkins, both of whom have underperformed their peripherals rather than pitched poorly, is supported directly by the data and does not require a trade.
Manage Kurtz's return from the injured list conservatively given the reduced competitive stakes of the remainder of the season.
Allow Wilson a full runway of playing time in the second half before drawing further conclusions about the sustainability of his decline, given the confounding effect of a thumb injury on the data available to date.

Statistical data was compiled from Baseball Savant (Statcast batted-ball data, percentile rankings, and player pages), FanGraphs (in-season performance analysis), and Baseball-Reference (traditional and split statistics, team and league leaderboards), cross-checked as of the 2026 All-Star break. Transaction and injury information not available on statistical pages, including the July 13 coaching change, injured list moves, and trade context, was drawn from MLB.com.
Rotation and bullpen unit-level ERA and FIP figures were calculated by the author from individual pitcher data on Baseball-Reference's team pitching page, innings-weighted by role, as of a July 3, 2026 snapshot. This snapshot predates Severino's injured list placement and the further decline in team ERA reported through the All-Star break; both figures are presented with their respective dates noted.

Glossary of Terms
wOBA -- Weighted on-base average. Weights each offensive outcome by its run value; a more accurate measure of offensive contribution than batting average or OPS.
xwOBA -- Expected wOBA. A Statcast estimate of a hitter's wOBA based on exit velocity and launch angle alone, independent of defense and ballpark. A large gap versus actual wOBA indicates performance driven by factors other than contact quality.
